The Dry Ribs at Corky's Rock!

As expected, we didn't manage to hit the road until almost noon -- it always seems like there are a hundred and one odds and ends remaining to be done before you can take that first step of the journey. And, of course, there's nothing like hopping on a hot bike when it's 90 degrees, hazy and the humidity is over 60%, I always say. At least roads were dry and the forecast said the weather was going to be good all the way to Memphis. (I should have known better :-((()

We were barely on the road 2 hours and we got our first soaking, just outside Talledega. I guess it could have been worse; riding from Tupelo to Memphis we saw a lot of storm damage -- blown-over billboards and highway signs, non-functional stoplights, and downed powerlines -- from storms that roared through the area two days ago. When we checked in this evening, the gal at the front desk said that 130,000 people were without power immediately after storms, and this evening the local power company said it might still be a week before the last of them get power back on. Anyway, other than being a little damp around the edges, we were none the worse for wear. Overall travel time was eight hours, which was over the GoogleMap estimate by about the same amount of time as we sat around waiting for the T-storm to pass Talledega. Tomorrow's forecast has T-storms and possible tornadoes on our route between here and Wichita. Hopefully, we won't pull a Toto and end up in Oz!

Dinner was a real treat. We stayed on the east side of town, just down the street from one of the Corky's Ribs & BBQ joints. I had heard about this place on a couple of food shows, and given that we were still looking a bit bedraggled from the road, a rib joint sounded like the perfect place to grab a bite. And, indeed, it WAS perfect. The staff was great and the slab of dry rub ribs for two was to die for. All in all, it was the perfect dinner for our first night on the road, with one exception -- I FORGOT THE CAMERA. In fact, I didn't even have the cell phone so I could snap a shot at the restaurant. Fortunately, I did remember to take a couple before we hit the road, so here's one of Gi, Tyler and our trusty steed, to kick things off.

  1. Deano & Gi, Sounds like a pretty good begining all in all. Let me know what time you will be coming through central Indiana on the next to last leg & hopefully we can meet for lunch?

i'll keep following and remember you can always crash at our house if it works out that way.
